Script quote and Romans 5:8 on the thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white close-up of script lettering reading 'I loved you at your darkest' with 'Romans 5:8' set beneath it in smaller print. The ink is solid black with fine, slightly soft edges on pale skin. The crop shows the edge of a light garment at the top, with the text centred across the frame.

Dear Tom,

The lambing shed is full again and Dad has finally stopped pretending he can manage the nights on his own. I sit up with the ewes now, wrapped in his old coat, the paraffin heater ticking beside the hurdles. Last Tuesday a ewe went down in the straw and wouldn't get up, and I thought of you, which I suppose is what happens when you've sat in the cold long enough to start talking to yourself.
I haven't forgiven the things you said in the yard that morning, and I'm not going to pretend I have. But Mrs Pryce from chapel came by with a jar of damson jam and said you'd written to her asking after the lane gate. Nobody asked me. I'm writing because I found your handwriting on the back of the feed invoices, those little loops you used to do when you were bored in Sunday school. They were the notes you left on the dresser before you went.
The lamb lived, by the way. It came out looking dead, and then when I rubbed it with straw it coughed and shook its head like it was cross about the whole business. I've put it in a box by the stove, and it's bleating at me now while I write.
If you want to come home for the lambing, the door's on the latch. If you don't, leave the gate shut and I'll understand. Either way, I'm leaving the porch light on.
Your sister, Nell
