Black cursive script lettering tattooed on the tops of two feet, worn with snakeskin-print peep-toe platform heels.

Black script lettering on both feet

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two feet in snakeskin-print peep-toe platform heels are shown close up against a dark, glittery floor. Each foot carries a small block of black cursive script on the top of the foot near the ankle, with fine, even linework. The palette is monochrome and the background is blurred, so the lettering is the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide was already turning when Orla Vane reached the sand bar at Wexmere, and the ferrywoman, Gannet Ruhl, did not wait for her to catch her breath. The bell was wrapped in oilcloth under Orla's arm. Her heels were the good ones, snakeskin-patterned and tall, the kind that had walked her out of the market at Fenstead in the first place. Gannet looked at them and said nothing for three strides, which was how Gannet said most things.

Two words had been inked across the tops of her feet by the travelling needle-woman who came through every harvest. The old folk could read the small black script and the young could not. One foot said Let go. The other said Let God. The needle-woman had told her the crossing took a pair: one foot to hold what you carried, one to release what carried you. Orla had never been certain which was which.

Halfway over, where the channel ran deep and green, the water rose to her ankles and then her shins. Orla stopped. She knelt in the cold, undid the straps with fingers that would not work properly, and set the heels side by side on the sand. Then she stood, lifted the bell against her chest, and walked on barefoot. When Gannet looked back from the far shore, the shoes were still standing where Orla had left them, upright in the rising water, toes to the sky, as if someone had only just stepped out of them and gone on without looking back.
