Colour realism rose tattooed on the upper arm beside black script lettering running down the forearm, on a person outdoors.

Red rose and script quote on arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A large, shaded red rose with green leaves sits on the upper arm, with soft highlights and dark red tones in its petals. Black handwritten script runs down the forearm beside it, set in a vertical line that reads as a quote. The rose is the dominant colour element against the bare skin and the blurred grass behind.

Dear Marjorie, the lodger in number four has finally stopped apologising for the clatter of her typewriter, and I think you would like her. She came off the Bristol train in February with one case and a red rose pressed between the pages of a library book, the petals gone the colour of brick. Mrs Pargeter at the chemist's says she paints the names of boats on the harbour wall. I have not asked her to confirm it.

Last Sunday the wind got into the back garden and carried the washing clean over the wall, and she was the one who went after the sheets down the cliff path, laughing with the pegs in her teeth. When she came back up, her sleeve had ridden to the elbow and I saw the rose there, big and shaded, with the words running down beside it in that slanting hand. Be who you are and say what you feel. I read it twice on the stairs while she put the kettle on, because I had always thought such sentiments belonged on a sampler, not on a person who has to look at them while doing the dishes.

You and I have not spoken since Father's funeral, and I know most of the fault was mine. I was the one who said you minded too much what the Cottrells thought of you. Perhaps I was the one who minded.

So I am writing to say the room at the top with the sea window is aired and the bed made up. If the train is late, leave the case with Mrs Pargeter. The lodger has promised to leave the back door on the latch, though she says a rose is no use as a lamp, and I have decided to believe her anyway.
