Script quote on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink fine line script quote is set in four staggered lines on the inside of a forearm, reading "Spirit, lead me where my trust is without borders." The linework is thin and even, with flowing loops and flourishes on the capitals and descenders. The skin is pale and the background is plain white, so the lettering is the sole focus of the composition.

Brother Anselm had spent forty winters copying the same old verses, so when the Chancellor of Ostmere demanded new lettering for the border gate, the job fell to Wenna, the youngest scribe. She sat by the cold window with a pot of iron gall ink that had thickened overnight, working the pen until the strokes were no wider than a hair.

The Chancellor wanted something sterner than the verse Anselm had suggested. He wanted the gate to say who was allowed through and who was not. Wenna wrote the pilgrim's prayer anyway, the one sung on the salt road by people who had long forgotten who first set it down: Spirit, lead me where my trust is without borders. She looped the capital S beneath the line, the way Anselm had taught her, so its tail curled round the first word like a hand cupping a candle flame.
Three days later a carter came up from the lowland villages with two children wrapped in his coat and a goat that would not walk. The gatekeeper, Halvard, could read only slowly, and his lips moved over the lintel one word at a time. He stopped at borders, looked at the pale stone, then at the children huddled on the bottom step, and lifted the bar without another word.
That night the Chancellor climbed the wall to inspect the work and found Wenna's draft pinned to the guardhouse post, its ink already dull with damp. He read it twice. In the morning a clerk brought her a fresh order, sealed in red, instructing her to paint the same lines again in larger letters. Wenna mixed a new pot of ink, trimmed her nib, and began again with the S.
