Script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a forearm with thin, cursive script in dark ink running from the wrist towards the elbow. A hand holding a fine brush is working near the start of the line, with some white residue visible on the skin. The warm-toned photograph has a soft focus and a green wooden surface and white paper in the background.

He had written it twice, once firm and once fast, as if he had changed his mind halfway through: Follow me and I will show you how to be free. The old lettering on the door had flaked to nothing, so she painted his sentence over the bare wood, letter by letter, the way he would have, with the tip of her tongue between her teeth.
By the time she reached the word free the wasps had gone quiet and the light had turned the colour of honey on the gold. She stepped down, wiped her fingers on her jeans and looked back at the door. Anyone walking the lane would read it. She wondered who he had meant to follow, and whether she had already started.
