Black and grey fine line script tattoo reading life doesn't stop for anybody across the inner forearm.

Script quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a forearm carrying a single line of cursive script that reads life doesn't stop for anybody. The linework is thin and even, with the letters sitting in a gentle, slightly sloping baseline across the skin. The background is a pale textured wall, and the soft monochrome lighting keeps the focus on the lettering.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Abernethy's kitchen clock had stopped the morning the funeral men came, and Tom Harker, who mended clocks for half the parish of Little Coddling, said he would not start it again until his brother came home from the sea. Nobody argued with him. It was a small town, and everybody had a stopped thing of their own somewhere in the house.

The bread still went up to the hall at six. The milk cart still rattled past the chapel gate. Tom sat at his bench with the dead clock in front of him and his tea going cold, and every morning Dolly from the post office put a letter through his door, and every morning he left it lying on the mat. Life doesn't stop for anybody, she told him once, not even for a man with a face set like cement. He told her to mind her own post.

In March the tide brought in a sailor's kitbag with a name stencilled on the canvas, but no sailor. A boy from the docks carried it up the hill on his shoulder and left it on the step without knocking. Tom opened the back of the clock that evening, found the spring with his thumb, and wound it slowly until the tick came back, thin and stubborn, into the room.

He set the clock on the windowsill where the lamplight could reach it, then went out to find the boy and give him a shilling and a cup of cocoa. When he came back the letter was still on the mat and the clock was still going, so he picked up the envelope and read it standing in the doorway with the cold coming in.
