The fair pulled into Hexham on Tuesday and set up on the gravel behind the rugby club, same as it did the year Dad had his heart turned. Mum sent me to the waltzer with a flask of tea and a face like thunder, and I stood by the generator for an hour thinking about your last postcard, the one with the lighthouse on it and no address. Ronnie Pask still runs the chair-o-planes. He asked after you and then pretended he hadn't.

Ronnie says the lads on the rides have a saying, though he would never admit to having one. Somebody's kid gets sick, somebody's van gets nicked, the ground goes to mud and the generator dies twice in a night. Then he tips his cap at the sky and says, you get what anyone gets, you get a lifetime. I used to think it was the most miserable thing I'd ever heard. Now I think it's the only fair thing a man could say about this job.

I've been doing your shifts on the coconut shy. Eleven pounds a night and the knack is in the wrist, not the arm, which you always said and I never believed. Yesterday a little girl in a yellow anorak knocked three coconuts off in a row and cried when she got the bear she wanted. I gave her two bears. Nobody noticed.

Come home if you're coming. If not, send a card with a stamp on it, so I know which of us is the one doing the waiting.
