Black and grey fine line script tattoo reading Radiant as the sun, photographed on skin against a pale background.

Script quote reading Radiant as the sun

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

A two-line handwritten script tattoo reads Radiant as the sun in thin, even black linework. The lettering has a flowing, joined-up style, with long tails on the R and the descender of the s. The background is a soft grey blur, so the body area is not identifiable and the image is entirely black and grey.

The night porter at Hollin Vale said the east wing lights only stayed on for the dying or the very lucky, and Nurse Maud Carrow had never decided which kind of night it was until the sister asked her to sit with old Mr Tennant at three in the morning. He had a pencil, a bad hand and a wish to write to his wife, who had died in the spring.

Maud took the paper. He dictated slowly, stopping for breath between words, and at the end he said the thing Gwen used to say when the kitchen window caught the first light: radiant as the sun, that's what you are. Maud wrote it out in her neatest hand, then wondered whether it was wrong to make his love look so careful on the page.

He asked her to read it back. She did. He shook his head, took the pencil from her and drew a long looping tail under the last word, the way he used to sign his cheques. That was the bit that mattered, he said, the trailing off, because it meant the thing didn't stop.

Near dawn the window went grey, then pale gold. Maud folded the letter and put it in his hand, and he slept holding it. By the time the day shift came up the stairs the bay was quiet, and the sun was already on the sill, pouring across the blanket as though it had been waiting all night for someone to notice.
