Script quote reading With pain comes strength on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a two line quotation in thin black script, reading With pain comes strength, set across the side of the ribcage. The linework is fine and even, with the larger first line slightly separated from the smaller second line. The photograph shows only ink and skin tones with a grey sports bra above, and the lower half of the body is out of frame.

I have finished the Crowther's fascia at last. Eleven days on a ladder in the wet, because gold leaf will not take in damp, so I waited for the sun and worked in the hour before the lunch crowd. Two lines, the big one first and the small one tucked beneath it, the way he taught me. The first line carries the eye and the second lets it rest. Old Mr Crowther stood under me with his hands in his coat and read it aloud twice, then asked if I could make the last word bigger. I told him that is not how it is done.
You said on the step that I only ever paint other people's sayings. True enough. But the phrase on that board is the one Dad scratched into the lid of his toolbox, With pain comes strength, and I scraped it off the first morning because it looked like a warning. Then I put it back, because a sign is for the street and not for the sign-writer.
Come home at Easter if you can. The gold will catch the light from the bus station, and you will see it from the road, the big line first and then the small one, and you can decide for yourself which part of it is the hurt.
