Matching sunshine quote tattoos on feet

Fine line · Ankle · Mixed · Photo

Two bare feet rest on green grass, each bearing a small tattoo of the words "You are my sunshine" in thin black lettering with a simple sun drawn beside it. The linework is delicate and the lettering is slightly handwritten in character. The sun is filled with yellow and orange, while the text is black, and the two tattoos are placed on the outer sides of the feet near the ankles.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Our mother could not carry a tune across a kitchen, but she hummed the same song every time she pegged out the washing, and by the summer of 1956 the whole of Ashby Lane had learnt the words off her. Winnie Tanner and I were sixteen that July and thought ourselves far too old for it. We sat on the post office wall with our shoes in our laps, counting the coins we had saved for the Leicester bus.

Winnie's father painted shop fascias in Market Harby, and he had shown me how to draw a sun with a dozen short rays so that it looked cheerful rather than cross. On the last Saturday before we left, we climbed the ladder into the hayloft behind the Tanners' barn with a bottle of Indian ink and a darning needle held over a match. Winnie went first. She held her breath the whole time and never once flinched, singing the words under her breath so I would keep the rhythm of the letters. When it was my turn, my sun came out a little lopsided, and she told me that was how you knew it was yours.

The bus pulled out on the Monday morning with only me on it. Winnie's mother had found the ink under the ladder and kept her home for a week, and I sat by the window with the sting still sore beneath my stocking.

Forty years on I still hum that song over the washing line, badly, the way my mother did. I have never drawn a sun since without seeing the hay dust in the light coming through the loft boards, and Winnie laughing at my lopsided rays as if they were the best thing she had ever seen.
