Fine line black script lettering tattoo across the upper back, spread over several lines of text beside the shoulder blade.

Script quote tattoo across the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a handwritten-style quote in thin black script, set over four lines across the upper back near the shoulder blade. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the lettering is the only subject. The photo is taken from behind with the subject wearing a white top, and the neutral skin tone and soft light keep the text easy to read.

Dad,

The lock keeper at Hythe Lane asked after you this morning, and I told him you were still down in Banbury mending the cabin roof, which is what you would have said. He laughed and said the Mary Ellen would be walking on water if you were in charge of her. I have the tiller now. I have been bringing her through the narrows since Easter without once touching the far bank, and I want you to know that before anyone else tells you.

Something has been on my mind. Last night the wind got under the tarpaulin and I couldn't get the pole to hold in the silt, and my arms went to jelly. I stood on the gunwale in the dark and felt for you the way you used to stand behind me, close enough to feel the heat off you but not quite touching, and then your hand came down on my shoulder the way it did when I was nine and frightened of the weir. I know it was only the wind shoving my coat. I know that. But I held still until the pole bit, and I kept it steady.

The kettle's on the stove and the dog is snoring across the hatch. Tomorrow we reach the broad water at Cropredy, and I'll lean the boat into the slow curve the way you showed me, eyes on the church spire and not the reeds. Mum says you'd be proud, but she says it with that face, so I'll take it from you instead.

Write back when you can. Tell me I've got the stern line right.

Your Nell
