Eleven years of Christmas cards, all signed the same way, with that great looping tail on the end of every word as if you couldn't bear to stop. I sat on the cold step of the flat in Hull reading them out loud to the gull on the railing, who didn't care.

The man from the parlour on Spring Street said he'd keep the copy of the lettering for me, the one you drew on the back of a bus ticket the summer before the carers came. He thought I wanted it for my shoulder. I told him it was for the rest of the family, that it was a joke between us. He didn't ask which joke. Nobody asks that sort of thing any more.

The ferry's at seven. I'm taking the bus ticket, the cards and the good scissors, and I'm going to stand on the quay at Spurn and say all of it to the wind, the way you'd want, with the bad spelling left in.
