Script quote across the upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of three lines of black script lettering on a person's upper back, near the shoulder blade. The thin, flowing linework is crisp and even, with the letters set in a slight slant. The ink is uniformly dark on light skin, and the text fills the centre of the frame with the top edge of the shoulder visible.

Dear Mags,

You will be standing at the lychgate in an hour with your hair going every direction in the wind off the reservoir, and I want you to know your gran is not fretting. I had my cry already, into the good tea towel, so you needn't worry about me doing it again in the church.
Your grandad said that line to me the first time he saw me at the Whitsun dance in Hebden, when I was up on the bandstand arguing with the bass player about the tempo. He leaned over the rail with his pint and said, God shook his head the day he built her. I told him he had a cheek. He said, oh but I bet he smiled. I married him eight weeks later, mostly to shut him up.
He never did get the line finished the way he liked. He wanted it cut into the headstone, and I said it was too long for stone, so it went on the back of our wedding photograph instead, in his terrible handwriting. I have kept it in the bureau under the good tablecloths ever since.
So when your Ian goes pale and makes a face at the vicar, let him. He is allowed. Just go and stand beside him, and let God have his smile.
Love, Gran
