A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Agnes Harkness kept the post office at Lowbeck, and in the winter of 1953 she also kept a grey she-wolf in the back scullery. A drover had left it with her in exchange for a shilling and a bottle of gin, saying only that it had been taken from a den above Kettle Fell and would not see the spring alone. Agnes had never turned a stray away in her life, and she was not going to start with one whose eyes were the colour of wet slate.

The village did not approve. Ned Crowther, who ran the bull at the top of the green, said a wolf in a scullery was a wolf in the parish, and one Sunday he came up the lane with his father's shotgun. Agnes met him at the door with a sack of mutton bones in one hand and her other hand resting on the frame. "You can shoot her, Ned," she said, "but you'll have to shoot the one in yourself as well, and I don't think you know where that one sleeps." He went home red in the face and did not come back for a fortnight.

Through the spring the wolf grew fat on bones and quiet. Ned's temper, fed on the pub talk and the bad news from the pit, grew thin and mean. Agnes told the schoolchildren that every creature gets the nature of what it is given most often, and they wrote it down because she was the postmistress and it sounded official.

In April the grey she-wolf went out through the open back door and did not return. On the step Agnes found a bone laid neatly, picked clean, and beside it a letter in Ned's careful hand asking whether she had any second-class stamps. She sold him two, and he took them without a word, and the lane was quiet for a long time after that.
