The mule would not go past the second cairn, so Ilse Varga unloaded it there and sat down on the frozen stones to read the letter again. It was short. Her brother had written it in the autumn, before he took the high road to the salt village, and she had carried it in her bodice for three weeks without opening it, because she knew what a letter from Matthias would say. He never wrote more than one line.

The line was written in pencil on the back of a tally slip: Remember who you are and what you stand for. Beneath it he had drawn a small fish, a joke from when they were children and fished the stream below the mill with string and no hooks. She laughed out loud, alone on the pass, and the sound went up the valley and came back to her thin and strange.

The old women in the village said the pass remembered everyone who crossed it and gave back only what they had brought up with them. Ilse had brought up a mule, two sacks of barley and a debt. She put the slip back in her bodice and stood. The wind had turned, and somewhere below a bell was ringing for the evening flock.

At the top of the rise she stopped, took out the slip and wrote beneath her brother's line in charcoal: I am still here. Then she tucked it under the nearest stone for whoever came after, and went down into the cloud with the mule's bell ringing before her.
