Script quote along the inner forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a four-line handwritten-style script quote in black ink across the inner forearm, running from near the wrist toward the elbow. The lines are slightly angled and evenly spaced, with the letters drawn in a consistent, thin monoline. The skin is pale and evenly lit, with the text filling the centre of the frame against a plain background.

Dear Ruth,

The night bus is nearly empty tonight, so I am writing this on the back of a depot timetable under the strip light that hums like a fridge. Your mother would have told me off for the mess. You will get this on Thursday, once you have found a flat in Leeds and stopped ringing me at half eleven to ask whether the boiler is meant to make that noise.
I keep thinking about the winter you were born, when the Corporation had me on the 42 from Salford to the Pendleton roundabout. Your mother was in Hope Hospital with a chest infection and you were not due for three weeks. I used to tuck the spare blanket behind the driver's seat and tell the late passengers that my daughter was coming. Nobody ever asked her name. I suppose I was carrying you even then, before you had any weight at all.
I should say the thing plainly, because I never could in person. I carried you every second of your life, from the lamp-lit wards to the car park where you learned to ride a bike with no brakes. And I will love you every second of mine, which is a promise I can only make like this, in biro, on a bus timetable at four in the morning.
The last stop is Ardwick Green. I'll wait for the lights to change, then drive myself home and leave the porch light on, the way you asked me to, even though you won't be there to see it.
