Script quote tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a two-line quote in a flowing cursive script, reading Never let your fear decide your fate. The linework is fine and even, filled in solid black with no shading or colour. The photo is close and slightly warm-toned, with the text running across the centre of the frame over bare skin.

You will want to know about the card. It came in the box with Dad's watch, folded twice, in the looping hand he kept for birthdays and bad news. Never let your fear decide your fate, it said, and underneath, smaller, as if he had thought better of it: buy the good bread. I laughed then, and I have laughed at it since, but I had it in my coat pocket at the bus station in Barstow when I nearly got back on the coach to Nevada. The ink has gone soft at the folds and the t has nearly rubbed off fate.
The lorry driver who pulled in at half two was called Tomasz. He had a dashboard full of saints and a radio tuned to a Polish station, and when I told him I didn't know yet where I was going, he laughed so hard he had to wipe his eyes on his sleeve. He dropped me at the Dry Lake turn-off with a bag of oranges and told me the bread in town was terrible.
I'll let you know. Your sunburnt sister, Ellie. P.S. I bought the bread anyway.
