Demetrios rubbed the chalk from the limestone with the heel of his hand and began again. The widow had first asked for four words above the kiln-shed door, then changed her mind to a whole line, and now the line sat in his head like a splinter. Never let your fear decide your fate. Her son had said it to her on the ship from Naxos, she told him, and it was the only thing she wanted cut.

He was not a man for proverbs. He cut names, prices, the ages of the dead and the epithets of the gods, and each letter he made was a promise that the stone would outlast the cutter. He laid the first line out with a fine point, leaning it slightly uphill toward the lintel, the way his master had taught him so the eye would climb it. The f wanted to lean forward and the r kept curling back on itself, as if it had second thoughts about the sentence.

By dusk he had the first half finished. The second line was harder, because the last word was the one he kept looking at, the t crossed high like a man lifting a hand to ask a question. He thought of his own father, who had been afraid of the sea and so never learned to swim, and who had watched the wide boats leave Piraeus every spring without him.

The next morning the widow came with an oil lamp still in her hand, read the stone, and said nothing for a long while. Then she pressed a coin into his palm and asked him to cut the final letter deeper, so it would hold the rain. He did. By noon the groove was full of water, and the word fate shone at the edge of the door.
