Script quote tattoo on a lower leg
Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a four-line quote written in flowing black script, with the lines set in a slightly staggered, centred block. The lettering is solid black with fine, even linework and some soft shading on the thicker strokes. The photograph is taken from above and angled slightly, with the skin filling most of the frame and a wooden floor visible in the background.

Mrs Dorothea Pask had let the front room at Gull Cottage to the same sort of man for thirty years: retired, polite, carrying a suitcase heavier than it looked. The new lodger, Mr Ellery Vance, was different. He arrived in October with a sketchbook and a cough, and asked only whether the tide came in under the pier at night.

He spent his mornings at the rail with a flask of tea, watching the grey water fold over the shingle. One evening Dorothea found him copying lines into his notebook, the same four lines again and again, each attempt a little looser than the last. "Something a friend said," he told her, not looking up. "I'm trying to make it sit right."
On the last Sunday of the month he came down to breakfast with his coat already buttoned and paid the week in advance, counting coins onto the tablecloth. Dorothea walked him to the gate. The wind came off the sea and lifted the tablecloth's corner, and he laughed properly, the first time she had heard him do it. He said the lighthouse would blink for him that night the way it always did.
Dorothea found the notebook on the windowsill after he had gone. On the last page, in pencil, someone had written the lines out cleanly, and beneath them a date she did not recognise, and a single word: Tuesday.
