Script quote tattoo on the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a two-line script quote tattooed across the skin, with the words God holds you in His arms above I hold you in my heart. The fine, cursive lettering has smooth, consistent black outlines with light shading, and the text fills most of the frame. Dark hair is visible at the top edge, and the soft lighting keeps the skin texture and text clear.

The lock keeper at Tadlow had been watching Nell scrape the old name off the bow for an hour before he asked what she meant to call the boat now. She said she hadn't decided. The paint came away in curls the colour of weak tea, and beneath it the wood was pale and new-looking, as if it had been waiting for someone to bother.

Her father had never said much over the tiller. He wrote short notes on the backs of tide tables and tucked them into places only she would look: the bilge pump box, the flour tin, the inside of the kettle lid. The last one turned up after the funeral, in ink so faded it might have been pencil. It said that God held her in His arms and he held her in his heart, and it was signed with a capital that looked like it had been practised for years.

She took the note to Iris Pell, a sign-writer in Thrapston who still worked with a squirrel-hair brush and a dish of size. Iris read it twice, turned it over, found nothing on the back, and asked whether Nell wanted gold leaf or black. Black, Nell said. Gold would be showing off, and her father had never shown off a day in his life.

Iris painted it along the port side, under the cabin window, in lines so fine the rain could have taken them. The next morning Nell walked the towpath and stopped at the lock gates to look back. The words had already caught the early sun, the way a thing does once someone has finally decided where it belongs.
