He walks with me script and cross on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot showing the phrase He walks with me in black cursive script, with a larger outlined cross at the end of the line. The lettering uses clean, consistent black linework with no shading, and the cross is drawn as an open outline. The image is taken at an angle under warm indoor light on a dark leather surface, and the ink is shown in sharp focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The grass between the Bramley rows has gone to seed by August, and your father still walks it at dusk with the secateurs in his back pocket, though there is nothing left to prune. You follow him because the path is narrow and the dog will not go ahead without him. Your mother calls from the farmhouse gate that the kettle is on, and he lifts one hand without turning round.

He stops at the old tree near the wall, the one that split in the gale of 1987, and runs his thumb along the bark where someone once carved initials that have since grown over. "Your gran planted this," he says. "Said the wind would always come from the west and she'd never see the east side bear." You have heard the story before. You let him tell it anyway, because the light is going gold through the leaves, the wasps have found the windfalls, and the whole orchard smells of cider that hasn't been made yet.

Halfway down the row he stops talking. You realise he is counting the trees under his breath, the way she used to, and that he has reached forty-one and is starting again. Nobody has the heart to tell him the hedge is gone and the new fence runs where the cherry walk was. The walking is the one thing he has kept. So you take his arm and count with him, one tree at a time, until the dog barks at the gate and the kettle sounds from the house.

Forty-one, he says at the gate, as if it were the first time. Forty-one, you agree, and you both go in.
