Script quote tattoo on skin
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink script quote runs across two lines on skin: 'Sometimes before it gets Better' above 'the Darkness gets Bigger'. The top line uses a looping cursive hand, while the lower line is more upright with larger capitals on Darkness and Bigger. The linework is clean and even with no visible shading, and the surrounding skin is softly blurred in a close crop.

You asked in your last letter whether the dark out there is as thick as the newspapers say. It is, Nell. It sits on the water like wet wool and the gulls go quiet in it. But I have started to think the worst of it comes before the light properly catches, when the wick is spitting and the glass is still black with soot and you cannot tell whether you have done anything at all. That is the hour I hate. Father calls it the sulking hour, and says nothing good ever got lit without it.
Last Tuesday the flame finally took. I had scrubbed the chimney with vinegar and newspaper until my knuckles bled, and when I turned the key the whole room went gold, and the beam swept out over Scarrow Point as if it had been waiting years for permission. A trawler man I had never met raised his hand from the deck as he passed under it. I did not know who he was. He did not know who I was. The light showed us both the rocks.
Come in June, if the boat runs. Bring the good scissors, and I will show you the stairs.
