The top panel shows As long as we're together... on tanned skin, and the bottom panel shows ...the rest will fall in place on lighter skin. The fine, even linework is set against plain skin with a soft, neutral background.

Nell, the relief boat didn't come on Tuesday or Wednesday, and the glass has been dropping since breakfast. I have the lamp trimmed and the log up to date, and I have counted the paraffin tins twice, which you would tell me to stop doing. The gulls have gone quiet in the way that means weather. I'm writing at the scrubbed table with the kettle on the stove so my hands have something to do.

You asked in your last letter whether I was lonely out here. I told you the truth, which is that the loneliness isn't the rock or the lamp. It's the hour after the light comes on, when I used to listen for you on the stairs with the tea. Mr Ferris at the harbour office says the ferry will run once the swell drops. He has said it every week since March, and I have started believing him about one time in three.
Last night a sea came over the landing and tore the spare drum off its chain. I went out with the storm lantern, the spray so thick I could barely find the rail, and I thought of the line you chalked above the kitchen door the winter we moved in. As long as we're together. I used to think it was a promise about the house. Standing there with my palm on cold iron, I understood you meant it as plainly as you'd say the tide turns.
So I've made myself a rule for the bad nights. I keep the light, I keep the log, and I keep one thought in my head: you are on the mainland with the kettle going, and the rest will fall in place. The boat will come. I'll climb the hill with my boots full of brine, and you'll be standing in the doorway telling me I'm late. Yours, Walter.
