Script quotes with hearts on a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two greyscale photographs show script lettering on the top of a foot, each phrase paired with a small heart. The linework is clean and fairly fine, with the heart shaded in solid grey. The top photo sits above a carpeted background and the lower one shows the same foot against a rough textured surface.

The snow had shut the pass for nine days when Maud Tallow came down the stair of the Hollin Inn with a lantern in one hand and a slate in the other. Her brother Jack was on the far side of the ridge, a shepherd's boy bound to a farm he had not chosen, and the only thing that crossed the snow now was the wind. She chalked a line on the slate, wiped it, and chalked it again.

The landlord, old Pell, watched from the hearth. "You'll not get a message over that," he said. "The crows won't carry it." Maud said nothing. She had heard her mother's saying, that folk who love each other across a valley are never really parted, only set a little further apart on the map. She did not believe it, but she had no better one.

On the ninth night a dog came scrabbling at the door with a scrap of oilcloth tied to its collar. Inside, in a hand she knew, Jack had written that they were together forever and never apart, and beneath it he had pressed a small heart so hard the pencil nearly tore the cloth. Maud read it twice by the fire. Then she turned the slate over and wrote the answer, which was only: maybe in distance, but never in heart.

She tied the slate to the dog and sent it back into the white. Pell swore the animal was seen at dawn on the far road, trotting home with its tail up, and that Jack came down the ridge the week the thaw began, carrying that same slate under his coat.
