Script quote with a small bird

Fine line · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line script phrase, Love me for who I am, runs diagonally across the skin, with a small solid black bird silhouette at the left end. The linework is thin and even, with some tapering in the letterforms, and the lettering is set in a flowing, handwritten style. The image is entirely black and grey against a soft, pale background, with the text filling most of the frame.

The ovens have been lit since four and the whole street smells of burnt sugar and wet slate. Father says you were a fool to sail north on the Marigold, and I told him a fool is only someone who asks the sea for a favour it never agreed to. I found your old cap in the bread bin. It still smells of starter and tar, and I did not throw it out, which Father has noticed.

I have spent the winter writing the same line on every order slip, the way you used to draw boats in the margins of my schoolbooks. Love me for who I am. I never meant it as a message until I saw it on the flour sacks in the dark, when no one could tell whose hand had written it. You went north wanting to be someone the sea would respect. I never wanted that. I wanted you, with salt in your hair and your bad knee and your terrible jokes.

Come home as you are, or don't come at all. If you come, the loaves will be warm and the back step is still loose, so mind your boot. I'll leave the door on the latch until the blackbird stops.
