Dear Mum, I know you wanted me to ring on Sunday, but the signal in Tolvane is a rumour and the only phone box has a crack through its glass like a lightning strike. So this is the long way round. The ferry from Carrick Point cost me eleven shillings more than the ticket man said it would, and I spent the crossing eating boiled sweets on the upper deck while a gull followed us for forty miles, hoping for crusts I never had.

You'll want to know about the lodgings. Mrs Adair runs the Heron on the harbour road and keeps a tin of pencil stubs by the register for anyone who wants to write on the walls. Someone has scrawled across the scullery door in careful copperplate: Make a wish, take a chance, make a change, and breakaway. Nobody here can tell me who wrote it. Mrs Adair says it was there when her husband bought the place, and that every guest who passes it eventually reads it aloud, usually when they've had one drink too many.

I read it aloud on my second morning. Then I went down to the quay and watched the starlings come in off the marsh, a dark ribbon that broke apart over the masts and reformed as though it had remembered something. I'm writing from the window seat now. There's a job at the net loft if I want it, and a room above the chandlery with a view of the water. I haven't decided. But I've stopped counting the days until I'm back, which is more than I expected from a letter that started with a complaint about a telephone.

Don't worry about me. Tell Dad the cat can have the chair by the range. I'll write again when I know what the birds are doing.
