Tattoo design drawing of the words I may not see you, but I can feel you in cursive script, with three shaded feathers, on a plain tan background.

Script quote with three feathers

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A drawn design of the phrase I may not see you, but I can feel you in flowing cursive script, running diagonally across the image. Three feathers are shown in shaded black linework, one at the lower left, one at the centre and one at the right, each with fine detail along the barbs. The design is in black ink on a plain tan background with no body part visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell, the fog came in on Tuesday and has not lifted since, so I have stopped counting days by the sea and started counting them by the feathers. A gull roosts on the gallery rail each dusk, grey as the lamp housing, and every morning it leaves a quill or two on the iron. I have pressed them between the logbook pages, as you taught me to do with the wildflowers.

The relief boat was due Thursday and did not come. Mr Pryce on the radio says the Sound is closed to anything with a hull. So I wind the clockwork, trim the wick and sweep the glass, and I talk to the lamp the way you talk to the kettle when you want it to hurry. Nothing shows past the railings. Only the beam goes out into the white and comes back to me like a question nobody answers.

Last night, near three, I went out on the gallery with my hand held flat in the air. I could not see the water, but I could feel it, a cold weight rising under the wet. I thought of you at the kitchen window with the tea going cold, and I could not have told you where the window was, only that it was there. I may not see you, but I can feel you, and that will have to do until the boat comes.

I am sending this with the Thursday post if the boat ever gets through. Keep the feathers for me. Put them in the drawer with the blue ribbon. When the fog lifts I will come home along the cliff path, and you can show me which ones I was too blind to find.
