The yard had iced over in the night, and Nell Ashdown stood at the gate with the feed bucket while her grandfather tested each stone with his boot. "Give us your hand, then," he said, not looking at her. "I'm not going down there on my own."

The lower field drained into a stock pond that had frozen hard as a plate. Three ewes had wandered onto the ice the evening before and only two had walked back. The third, a grey-faced ewe with a torn ear, lay in the reeds at the far edge, too stiff to stand. Nell went first, wellingtons skidding, and her grandfather's fingers closed round hers, cold and ridged with old scar tissue from the baler. He leaned out over the bank while she braced her heels in the frost.

They got the ewe onto the bank between them, her hooves scrabbling on the sacking Nell had dragged down. When she was clear, her grandfather did not let go. He said her name twice before she understood that he was steadying himself, that his knee had given way at the stile in October and he had been holding on to her for the whole climb back up.

In the kitchen they wrapped the ewe in an old blanket by the range and sat with their hands round mugs of tea going cold. His knuckles were white around the ceramic. Nell turned her palm over and saw the faint pale marks her fingers had left on his wrist. Neither of them mentioned it. In the morning she would tell him she had been the one who pulled, and he would let her have that.
