Script quote tattoos on two feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet overlap, each with a line of thin black script across the top of the foot. The upper foot reads for them I'd risk it all, and the lower foot reads because of her I will not fall. The skin is shown in soft, close lighting against a dark background, with the text running diagonally along each foot.

The tent smells of sawdust and wet canvas by the time the lamps are lit, and you have already rewound your wrist tape twice. Up on the high platform Marguerite is murmuring her count, one hand on the rope and the other flat against her thigh. You are meant to be checking the rigging. Instead you are watching her lips move.

Nobody in the crowd ever asks who catches the catcher when the wires go slack. The ringmaster calls your act a family business, which is a kinder lie than most. Her father flew before her, and before him an old Austrian called Oskar who lost two fingers and kept flying anyway. You were nineteen when you first climbed the ladder, and she said without turning round that you would be useless if you blinked.
Tonight the left wire sings a note nobody likes. Marguerite hears it too, because her count stutters on the word three. You feel the whole tent shift under two hundred people holding their breath, and you think of the things you have said to her over twenty-two winters, most of them rude and none of them untrue.
She lets go on four. For one long second she is only air, arms open, hair loose, and you are only the place she is going to land. Then her hands close on your wrists with the familiar bite, and the net nobody trusts is never needed. You swing her home over the sawdust. Later she will tell the reporters it was the count that saved her. You know it was the swing, the ground under your feet, and her weight trusting you to hold it.
