Two black script lettering tattoos, one reading for them I'd risk it all on the top of a foot and one reading because of her I will not fall on the other foot.

Two script quotes on the feet

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet show black script lettering tattooed across the top of each foot, with one line on the upper foot and a second line on the lower foot. The thin, slightly uneven linework is shown in a sharp, close-up photo against a dark grey background. The ink is uniformly black with no colour, and the lines sit diagonally across the skin following the shape of the foot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wire was strung between the chapel roof and the water tower at Harkley Mill, and by seven the crowd had packed the churchyard wall to watch Tom Sallis cross it with a kitchen chair balanced on his shoulders. Nobody in the town had ever seen him come down badly. His mother had stopped asking him to stop. Nell stood at the foot of the ladder with the chalk bag, counting the rungs under her breath the way she always did, because counting was easier than watching.

Ray had been the one who wanted to go up first, the spring the fair came back after the war, when the painted horses were patched and the generator coughed like an old dog. He was nine then, all elbows and questions. Their father had said the wire was no place for a boy who had nothing to lose. Ray had only shrugged and said he had Nell to catch him, and when Nell asked him why he wasn't afraid, he said, "Because of her I will not fall." She had written it on the back of a handbill that night so she would not forget it, and under it, in smaller letters, she wrote the thing she believed: for them I'd risk it all.

Tonight the chair tipped at the midpoint, where the wire sagged and hummed in the wind off the fens. The crowd made one sound, and Nell made none. She was counting again. Tom swayed, found his balance somewhere under the clouds, and walked on. When his boots finally touched the tower leads, she heard the whole churchyard breathe out at once, and she realised her chalk bag was empty in her fist.

Afterwards Ray came down the ladder grinning, palms raw from the rope. "You didn't look," he said. "I looked the whole way," she told him, and handed him the bag. He pressed the folded handbill into her hand, and when she opened it under the lamp there was a new line in his cramped pencil beneath her own: forty-one rungs, and I was never once frightened.
