Script tattoo on forearm in a selfie
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman holds a camera to her face in a mirror-style selfie, wearing a geometric printed crop top and matching skirt with heeled sandals. Thin black script lettering runs down her forearm, and a small dark mark is visible near her ankle. The background is a bright room with pale curtains and a wooden floor, and the lighting is soft and even.

Mr Okafor at Bray lock says I write like a man signing for a parcel, all hooks and hurry. He is right, but he was kind about it, and he let me stand on the balance beam while he worked the gate so I could see how the water rises under the boat like a held breath. Every time the paddles drop I hear Dad counting under his breath, and I count with him, though he never once got past nine.
The Patience sold on Tuesday to a couple from Reading who want to call her Serendipity and paint her hull lilac. I signed the papers on the bonnet with the same pen Dad used for the tide tables. They asked whether I'd left anything aboard, and I said only a line of writing that nobody else could read, so it would stay where it was.
I'm writing this from the bank at Marsh Lock with my sleeve pushed up and the ink still raw. If you come down in August, bring the good kettle. I'll show you how the words look when the sun comes low across the cut, and you can tell me whether I've got his capitals right.
