Black mandala tattoo on the chest
Blackwork · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A mirror selfie of a person in a sleeveless coral maxi dress with a plunging keyhole neckline, cropped below the chin with the phone raised across the face. A solid black ornamental mandala tattoo with lace-like detailing sits in the centre of the chest, showing as dense, bold ink with little shading. The image is mostly warm coral and neutral tones, with a light wall and wooden floor in the background.

Sit closer, the fire's only lit for those of you who listen properly. No, Tomas, not the one about the drowned bell again. This is about Ilse Varga and the nets she mended on the harbour wall at Skerrow, and how she tied them so tight that not one pilchard ever slipped back out.

She worked with a bone needle and tarred twine and never drew a pattern on paper. Every knot she tied in a ring, going round and round from a single centre point, so each net came back to the boats looking like a rose window cut out of black lace. Skipper Dunn of the Morwenna laughed at her. A net should be a net, he said, not a chapel. But the Morwenna came home heavy every time she carried Ilse's mending, and the other men stopped laughing and started queuing.
Then came the autumn gale. The Morwenna went out on the Tuesday and did not come round the point until the Thursday, her sail in ribbons and her hull scraped white by the reef at Gannet Stack. The wives stood on the wall with their shawls pulled tight. When Dunn climbed up at last, he dragged a net behind him, half the mesh gone, and held it out without a word. In the middle of it, where the rocks had torn everything else to nothing, one black ring was still closed.
Ilse took it, turned it over in her hands and ran her thumb along the knots, round and round, until she found her own work still holding. That is why, when a fisherman's wife comes up the wall asking for something to bring her husband home, we don't give her a charm. We hand her a needle and show her where to start, at the very middle, and we tell her to keep going round.
