Dear Harriet, The sun has been through the front windows of Mrs Pellow's boarding house since half past six, and by the time I come down to breakfast the yard wall has gone the colour of boiled milk. My straw hat hangs on the hook by the scullery door now, its brim fringed where the gulls had a go at it on the sea wall. Dora says it makes me look like a scarecrow who has run away to the seaside, which I suppose I am.

Every morning the shadows come across the sand and climb the cream plaster in long hard shapes, like fingers trying to read something written there. I have taken to standing in them for a minute before the heat gets into my shoes. The orange bathing costume dries on the line behind the privies, ribbed and stiff with salt, and the draper in Fore Street swore it would not fade. I have decided to believe him, the way I believed you in March.

Mr Carew the printer has promised to set the card I gave him, the one with your name copied out in my best hand, but he says the ink runs in this weather and half the letters will bleed into the paper. I told him that would suit me. Some things are better read partly, and a name that can only be half made out is easier to carry on the long walk back up the hill.

I will post this on Thursday. If the wind is kind, the shadow on the wall will still be there when you read it, and you may trace the letters with your finger and tell me which ones you cannot make out. Yours, Lottie.
