Floral back tattoo on a woman on the beach
Japanese · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair tied up sits on sand with her back to the camera, wearing a black bikini. Her back is covered by a large tattoo of chrysanthemum-like blooms and leaves, drawn with bold outlines and grey shading. The black and white photograph is framed with sand in the foreground and trees along the horizon.

You will laugh, but the chrysanthemums along the terrace have finally come good, and not one of them minded the wind. Father always said they were fussy things, wanting a hard frost and then sulking when it came too early. Mr Coyle, who has the room over the kitchen, cut the first bloom this morning and carried it up to the widow in number four as though it were the Crown Jewels. He has been drawing them all week in grey ink on the backs of his ferry tickets, outlines first, then the petals shaded in close hatching until they look wet.
Mrs Dunning, who keeps the books, says the drawings are better than the flowers. Mr Coyle said the flowers were only drawings done in a hurry by the weather. He sails on the Thursday boat, and he left his sketchbook on the sideboard with the elastic still round it, which I took as a sign he did not expect to need it back soon. I have not opened it. Mrs Dunning has, twice, and she will not say what she saw.
This evening I found one loose sheet under the teapot. A single bloom folding in on itself, every petal edged so heavily the ink had nearly gone through the paper, and beneath it, in small careful capitals, FOR WHOEVER KEEPS THE BED. The wind got under the page when I went to the door, and I let it go over the wall toward the sea. It seemed the proper place for a flower that refuses to die in one season.
Write soon and tell me the frost has held off in Leeds.
Your loving sister, Mable
