Bow tattoo on ankle beside leopard print heels

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A raised leg wearing a black suede platform stiletto with a leopard print panel, a rhinestone heart detail and a metallic ankle strap. A small black linework bow tattoo sits on the skin above the ankle at the top of the frame. The tattoo appears to be a simple outline, and the warm, soft lighting falls across the shoe and leg against a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain drummed on the tarpaulin over Dilys Okafor's repair stall at Brindle Street Market, running off the edge in a thin silver line onto the cobbles. On her bench sat a pair of black suede platforms, one heel already recapped, the leopard-print panel lifting at its corner like a page that had been read too often. A luggage tag was tied to the left strap in blue biro: Collect Sat. Ask for Marnie.

Marnie never came. Dilys had worked that stall for twenty-two years and knew the way people left things behind, usually with a tag and a promise. The rhinestone heart had been prised loose by someone in a hurry, so she glued it back with a bead of clear resin and waited for the resin to go tacky. The metal strap had a crack where the buckle met the leather, so she fixed it with a sliver of brass, filed smooth. Then, because the ankle strap looked bare without it, she tied a narrow black grosgrain bow at the join, neat as a parcel.

On the third Saturday a woman in a yellow cagoule stopped at the stall with a carrier bag clutched against her chest. She looked at the shoes, then at the bow, then at the tag, and her mouth did something complicated. She said she had bought them off a van in the spring and never worn them, and that she had only ever meant to bring them back. Dilys handed them over and didn't ask why.

After the woman had gone, Dilys stood under the drip for a while. The rain kept coming, beading on the suede where the shoes had sat, and the little bow had darkened at its edges but held its shape. She wiped the bench, put the kettle on, and left the tag where it was, still asking for Marnie.
