The letter came to the box at Sallow Wells in the third week of August, addressed in a hand so joined up it looked like one long breath. Nobody on that road had written by hand in years. I carried it forty miles on the passenger seat of the mail van, wedged under a thermos and a tin of boiled sweets, and kept glancing at it the way you'd glance at a bird that had got into the cab.

The loop of the l trailed past the stamp, and the e curled back on itself like a dog settling into dust. Inside was a single sheet of tracing paper folded twice, with one word on it and nothing else. No name, no return address. I asked at every garage between Sallow and Tierra Blanca. The man at the petrol pump with the cracked sunglasses said a woman used to drive a green Land Rover out past the dry lake every Thursday, and that she had stopped writing the word on the backs of receipts after her husband took the car to Phoenix and didn't bring it back.

On the Thursday I found the Land Rover parked at the cattle grid, doors open, a flask balanced on the bonnet. Nobody was there. Across the dust on the windscreen someone had drawn the same word with one finger, the same long unbroken line, and the sun had already begun to thin it.

I left the van idling and copied it onto the back of my delivery slip, joined up the way she'd done, and the wind took the paper before I reached the e.
