Sit down by the stove, you'll never see the lamp from there anyway. My father kept the light at Hallow Point for thirty-one winters, and the only word he ever shouted into fog was Lumos, which the curate at Penmorran swore was Latin for I give light. He painted it on the glass of the lamp-room door in letters as tall as a man's forearm, so the boats coming up from Vell would have something to read when they couldn't read the water.

The night the Gull Mary came in blind, the paraffin ran low and the wick started to spit like a cat. Father climbed the iron stair with a tin of oil in one hand and his good coat still wet from the slip, and he couldn't get the lamp to catch. I was twelve and useless, holding the torch with both hands because my fingers wouldn't stop. He said the word, and then he said it again, louder, as if the sea were deaf and owed him an apology.

The flame took on the third try, and not because of the oil. Father always said it was the match I struck, shaking as it was. In the morning there were four boats on the slip and a gull sitting on the lamp-room rail, looking very pleased with itself. I still have the match box in my apron pocket, though I've never once struck it since.
