Script words on thigh and ankle
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The left photograph shows black script lettering on the back of a thigh, reading I'm fine across two lines, rotated in the frame. The right photograph shows a similar black script inscription on the ankle, with a bare foot and painted toenails visible above it. Both tattoos are in black ink with clean, fine strokes set against plain skin, on a carpet and bedding background.

"I'm fine," it said, and beneath that, in the same tilted script, a second line: "Save me." She knew the trick from childhood, when they passed notes in chapel by writing upside down so their mother could not follow. Tom only ever did it when he was in trouble he could not say out loud.
She took the bus down to Newlyn with the card in her coat pocket. The harbour office smelled of tar and burnt coffee. A clerk with ink on his cuffs said the Morwenna Rose had put in on Friday, that her crew had gone up to the Star, and that nobody had seen Tom since. Nell asked for a pencil. She copied both lines onto the back of a shipping form, the right way up, and the clerk read them and stopped moving his hands.
Outside, the gulls were working the tide line. Nell held the postcard up to the grey window and let the letters fall into place, the way Tom always wanted her to. Then she laid it face down on the counter and asked when the next tide turned.
