Handwritten words on lower leg and ankle
Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
The left photo shows the words I'm fine in black handwritten script on the outer lower leg, just below the knee. The right photo shows the words save me in similar black script on the ankle and lower calf, with the foot and a pair of shorts visible. The linework is bold and monochrome, with no shading or colour, and both photos are cropped to the legs and feet.

Ada Penhallow kept the chalk in a tin by the net loft door, and every boat that left Skerrick harbour carried a board in her hand. On it she wrote what the men would say to her, in the small slanting hand she had learned from the parson's daughter. Her son Tam asked why she bothered, since the fleet came home every night in the end.

"Because the sea doesn't read," she said, and blew the dust off the board. "The gulls don't, and the weather doesn't either. But the men do, and the coastguard does." She had two phrases she used. I'm fine she wrote each morning and rubbed out at dusk. Save me she had never written and hoped never to. Tam laughed and said she was making a fuss over nothing.
The fleet went out on a Tuesday with a grey sky over the Brisons. By four the wind had turned, and by six the boats were sending lamps across the water like questions. Ada stood on the quay with the board pressed to her coat. Tam's boat had not answered the flares. Then a runner came up the steps with a scrap of oilcloth torn from a sail, and on it, in pencil pressed hard enough to tear the cloth, were the words save me.
She did not wait for the lifeboat men to argue. She took the lantern from its hook, wrote I'm fine on the board in her largest hand, and tucked it under her arm. Then she walked down to the slip where the old punt was kept, because a board says nothing to a boat that cannot hear it, and somebody has to row out and say it back.
