Scrollwork armband with draped chains

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A dark scrollwork band wraps around the upper arm, with small clear crystal accents set along its curls. Two chains hang down from the band, and a third chain loops from the band to a crystal, all drawn with even, fine linework. The ink is near black, set against a black top and a blurred background of pink flowers and greenery.

Dear Ada,

You asked in your last letter why I have stopped wearing the silver band Mr Pell made me, and I have been turning the question over all week like a coin that won't settle. The truth is the band was never mine. I sold it to the manager of the Marquis Ballroom for the price of a winter coat, the one with the fox collar you always admired, and he had Pell file the links so they would hang loose when the girls danced. Three chains, he said, for the three ways a dancer can be pulled off her feet.

Last Saturday the floor was slick with spilled lemonade and the bandleader counted us in at half past nine. I danced with a clerk from the gasworks who trod on my hem twice and apologised each time. Every turn the paste stones set along the curls caught the lamps and threw little white coins across the wall. I watched those more than I watched his feet.

Perhaps that is why I stopped at the foot of the back stair and undid the clasp. It opened easily. The chains slid down and I let them fall onto the landing, where the cleaner would find them in the morning, and I went back out into the music with nothing jangling at all.

Keep the coat, Ada. I am not sorry about the coat.

Yours in haste, Winifred
