Dotted heart outline on an ankle
Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A fine dotted line forms a looping outline across the ankle, with several small solid hearts scattered along it and one larger outlined heart near the lower edge. The ink is solid black, with crisp dots and thin lines on smooth skin. The photograph is taken close up in soft light, with the shoe visible at the bottom of the frame.

Dear Tomasz,

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since Tuesday, so the awnings sag and the cloth stall smells of wet wool. Mrs Okafor has had me on the pounce wheel all morning. You know the one, the little toothed star on a handle that rolls a dotted line through the tracing paper so the chalk can seep through. She says a dotted line is a promise that the scissors will go where the pattern says and nowhere else.
Yesterday a man came to the stall with a sketch of a dress he wanted made for his wife's sister. He had drawn a loop of dots round the hem, with tiny solid hearts set along it like stitches, and one larger outlined heart at the bottom where the seam should close. Mrs Okafor laughed at him, kindly, and then she took his pencil and showed me how the loop would fall on a bias cut so the hearts sat square whenever the cloth moved. I thought it was the cleverest thing I had ever watched anyone do with a pencil.
He left a deposit in a paper envelope and a note asking that the hem be finished before the wedding. Mrs Okafor pinned the note to the wall above the bolts of silk, where the damp can't reach it. Tonight I am cutting the loop out of the paper, dot by dot, with the rain drumming on the tin roof and the hearts waiting on the table for their seam.
Your sister, Ada
