Black and grey scrollwork band tattoos wrap around two fingers of a hand, one wide and one thin, beside coral and teal painted nails.

Scrollwork ring tattoos on two fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held together in close view, with black and grey tattoos forming bands around two fingers. The wider band on the ring finger has bold looping scrolls, while the thinner band on the finger beside it has a narrower pattern of scrolls and dots. The soft focus and warm skin tones keep the focus on the tattoo lines and shading, with coral and teal nail polish in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stationmaster at Holloway Cross had two sons and only one old wrought iron gate to share between them, so when the snow came early that winter he sent them down to the goods yard with a hacksaw and a promise. Whatever they could cut from the gate by the time the last up train left, they could keep. Tom, the elder, went for the heavy scrollwork at the top, the big looping curls that the Victorians had poured for a cattle company that went bust. Ned, who was small and patient, took the thin spiralled edge and the little brass studs that had fallen into the gravel.

They worked through the night with a lantern hung off a nail. Tom hammered his cut strip round a ring of wood until the curls sat tight and wide as a man's wrist, and Ned bent his narrow band and punched dots between the scrolls with a nail and a stone. Neither spoke much. Ned said afterwards that his brother had been crying, though Tom swore the cold had got into his eyes and nothing more.

When the last train drew in at dawn, the stationmaster came down the steps with his coat open and found the two of them standing by the gate, hands held out in front of them as if they were waiting to be paid. He looked at the rings for a long time. Then he took off his cap, turned it round twice, and said that a gate was only a gate until somebody made it into something a person could carry. The train went out. Tom and Ned walked home along the line, their bands catching the grey light, and neither of them ever took the rings off again.
