Small scrollwork band on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of fine black scrollwork with curling leaf-like swirls wraps partway around the side of a finger. The linework is thin and uniform, with solid, dark ink in the curls and no visible shading. The photo is taken close up against a dark background, with the hand and the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the fire, because this is the tale of Mrs Ode Pennyworth and the vine that would not be pruned. She kept the walled garden behind the almshouses at Little Wenham, and she had a rule she repeated to every boy who came to help with the spades: a vine goes where it is led, and not one tendril further.

The trouble started the spring the smith's son moved in across the lane. He was a quiet lad who forged iron scrolls for the church gates, and one morning he watched her tie back a bramble and said she was doing it wrong. She was, as it turned out. The curl of the stem needed a second loop, a little leaf at the turn, the way his father's ironwork had them. She laughed at him and let him show her, and by midsummer the wall was crowned with curling leaves that looked as if they had been poured from a ladle.
Then came the frost that split the old pear tree clean down its middle. Ode sat in the wet grass that night with a bottle of cider and said to nobody that a garden is only ever the thing you keep returning to. The boy came out with a lantern and found her there. He did not say anything clever. He took a length of fine wire from his pocket, bent it into a band the width of a finger, and wound it round the split bark until the tree stood straight again.
They were married in October, and the vine climbed the church wall too, and that is why, if you go to Little Wenham and look at the lychgate, you will find the same scroll worked in iron, curling round the post like a ring that has never been taken off.
