Scrollwork thigh tattoo with tram and triangle

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A pale leg rests across a dark sofa, showing a black outline tattoo on the outer thigh. The design combines ornamental swirls and flourishes with a triangle, a tram or bus shape, a round ball-like motif and a teardrop shape. Fine, even black linework with no shading or colour, and the design is arranged in a loose cluster that wraps down the thigh.

Dear Tom, the Gull Street points froze again this morning, so the 7.40 sat in the depot yard for forty minutes while Harold swore at the switch and poured kettles over it. I used the wait to finish the lost property ledger, which is my job now that Mrs Pollard has gone to her daughter's in Leeds. Everything goes in the green book, dated and numbered, down to the last hairpin.

The strangest entries are the ones I cannot explain. There is a red rubber ball, scuffed white along one side, found under the lower deck seat in August. There is a brass triangle with a hole punched through each corner, which I believe came off a pram. There is a glass teardrop the size of a plum stone, and a small iron tram that a child swore was hers, though the conductor on that run swears he never saw a child at all. I keep them all in a biscuit tin under the stairs, and I have started to think of the tin as a sort of cargo.

Last Thursday a boy called Eli Mott came to the window asking for the ball. He was perhaps nine, with ink on both hands, and he described it so exactly, the scuff and the dent, that I handed it over without a claim slip. He said his grandfather had bounced it off the seawall in 1936 and lost it down a drain, and that the drain had been dug up last spring. Before he left he drew on the back of a spare ticket: our tram with scrolls all round it like frost on a window, a triangle, a teardrop, and the ball sitting in the bottom corner like a sun.

I pinned the drawing into the ledger, which is against every rule Mrs Pollard ever set. I have since opened a new column headed Left on Purpose, and I expect to be very busy filling it. Your loving sister, Joan.
