Red rose on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A red rose in full bloom with dark grey shading at its centre and peach highlights on the petals, surrounded by green leaves. Bold black outlines and solid colour fills give it a traditional look. The tattoo is shown on a pale leg above the knee, with black knee-high socks and a leopard print garment visible nearby.

Dear Ray, the trellis by the bandstand came down in Tuesday's gale, so Mr Pell has been paying the Hobbs boys sixpence a bunch to save what roses they can before the rain finishes them. I kept the best one back for you. It has gone a bit bent and smells of wet wool from the cloakroom, but the red is still bold as a postbox, and the leaves are green enough to fool anyone at the far end of the quay.

Saturday was heaving. The band came over from Leeds in a borrowed van and played 'Red Sails' four times because the girls kept asking, and Ivy from the tobacconist's danced with a corporal until his cap slid off into the sawdust. Nobody minded the sawdust. You would have laughed. Nobody there knew how to waltz, so we all just stamped and spun and shrieked, and the floor sang under our shoes like a ship's deck.
Here is the thing I have not told anyone. When I took the rose out of my coat pocket by the cloakroom hatch, one petal had gone dark at the heart where the shadow sits, a grey-black bruise I did not expect. Mr Pell said it was only the damp. I said nothing. I pressed it flat between the pages of my mother's Bible, between Ruth and Naomi, where the dark has crept out onto the paper like ink.
Write back soon and tell me the sea is kind. When you come home I will show you the page, and you can decide whether the rose is still red or whether it has already started to keep something of us.
