The turtle came up the beach again last night, just after the tide turned, and I was the only one awake to see her. She hauled herself past the wall where the old pink flowers have dropped their petals all over the sand, her shell as broad as the kitchen table, and dug her hole with her back flippers while I sat on the step with the lamp off so I wouldn't frighten her. Mum says it's the third nest in as many summers and the council want to put fencing round the whole cove, which will be no use to anyone who wants to see things properly.

After she'd gone back down I counted the eggs with a torch, ninety-one of them, white as peeled almonds, and wrote the number on the back of your last letter because I'd run out of paper. Mr Pryce says the hatchlings know the way to the water by the light on the sea, not the land, so the lamps along the front have to go. I haven't told him I'd already switched mine off.

Before she left, she stopped at the edge of the surf and turned her head towards the step, and we looked at each other for what felt like a full minute. I don't think she was afraid of me. I think she was making sure she'd remember the way back. That's what I keep thinking about with you: wherever you're sailing, you know where this beach is. Come home before the hatching in August, or at least send a line saying which way the wind is blowing for you.
