Small lotus outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small, simple lotus flower is drawn in black outline on the side of an ankle. The petals are single lines with no shading, giving a clean, minimal finish. The skin is pale and the tattoo sits centrally on the ankle bone area, with a patterned fabric hem visible above and beside it.

You'll want to sit down before you look, because the thing takes its time. Everybody in Hollin wants to rush it, and nobody who rushed it ever saw it open. Come and lean on the gate, mind the nettles, and I'll tell you how the pond got its flower.

Two summers before the war, a tinker called Abel Crake came up the Ridgeway with a tin trunk and a boot full of seed heads he'd bought off a cook in Liverpool. He said they were roots of something that would not die if you left it alone. Nobody believed him. He pushed the seeds into the mud of the old horse trough at the bottom of the lane and walked on to Stroud without collecting his wages.

The trough went green and then silver, and the stems rose through the water like pencil strokes on wet paper. The leaves lay flat and clean, every edge drawn sharp. But the bud would not open for anyone who came shouting. Parson Bell came with a rake and a hymnbook. The bailiff came with a paper that said the land was to be filled for a car park. Each of them stood over it, tapping, and it stayed shut like a fist.

Then the bailiff, a young man called Fred Oakes with cold hands, sat on the wall one evening because his van had broken down and he had nothing better to do. He said nothing for an hour. The frogs started up, and the bud lifted one petal at a time until the whole flower lay open on the dusk. He wrote to the council that week and called the ground unsuitable, and the pond is still there, though you'll need to be quiet to see it.
