Seahorse, shell and starfish on the top of a foot
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A pink seahorse is the central subject, surrounded by an orange scallop shell, a purple starfish, green seaweed, blue bubbles and a brown rock. The design uses bold black outlines with smooth shading and highlights on the seahorse and shell. Vivid colours fill the composition, which is arranged vertically to follow the shape of the foot.

Now sit yourselves nearer the stove, because the gulls on the chimney pots will only tell this one wrong. Mrs Pargeter kept the pink boarding house at the end of Gull Row, the one with the gate that never shut, and every August she took in the same lodger, Mr Ambrose Tull, a retired cartographer who walked the shingle with a tin bucket and a notebook full of arguments with the tide.

One morning after the big spring tide he came up the steps shouting for a basin. In the bucket was a seahorse, pink as a boiled prawn and furious about it. She had a crest like a burnt-out candle, and she would not stop turning her head to look at him with one bright black eye. "She is a fish who has lost her way home," Tull said. Mrs Pargeter gave her a saucer of rockpool water and a brass cockle shell for a bed, and they called her Dorothea, after a bishop's wife who had once stayed and complained about the damp.
Dorothea would not eat. She stared at the window. Each night the sea crept under the door, and each night Tull carried her down to the rocks, where an old purple starfish named Cornelius waited with his five arms folded. "She belongs in the green weed by the brown stone," Cornelius told him, "near the orange fan of a shell. Everybody here owes somebody a tide."
On the last night of the season the gate finally swung shut on its own. Mrs Pargeter found Dorothea's saucer empty and the bucket full of blue bubbles drifting up the stairs. Tull's room was bare. Down on the rocks, a curl of pink tail was wrapped twice round a strand of weed, and beside it, folded like a fan, lay a single silver scale that caught the lamplight. Mrs Pargeter kept it in the saucer and never charged anyone for the cockle shell again.
