Shell and pearl with hearts on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of a scallop shell with a pale pearl at its centre, its ridged halves shaded in purple, turquoise and pink. Red hearts, green leaves, yellow sparkles and small blue bubbles surround the shell. Bold black outlines and smooth colour blends sit on the arm against a pale blue background, with the subject placed centrally in the frame.

You are nine, and the pond behind Nana's greenhouse has been out of bounds twice this week, so naturally your hand is already in the water when the hose clicks off. Something ridged and cold sits beneath the lily pads. It is the purple scallop she brought back from Filey, and when you lift it out the water runs off in silver threads that catch the morning light.

Tucked where the two halves meet is a pearl no bigger than a pea, pale and faintly pink, like a moon that has forgotten its way down. Nana says it is a bead from a necklace she lost years ago, and that she dug the necklace under the runner beans the summer Grandad died. You do not believe her. You hold the shell up to the sun and the ridges fill with stripes of turquoise and rose, and a sea opens up inside them, with three yellow sparkles bobbing over its surface like lanterns.
Sweet peas nod along the fence, red as the hearts Nana stitched onto your gloves. Bubbles rise from the mud each time you breathe over the water. You carry the shell up the path, careful as a full cup of tea, and find her at the sink with her sleeves rolled to the elbow. She does not turn round. "Pearls don't stay in ponds, love," she says. "Put it back where it came from, and it'll find its own way home."
You walk back down the garden with the shell cupped in both hands. The pond is still and clear. When you lower the scallop into the water it opens by itself, and the pearl slips free, rising slowly through the green light until it breaks the surface and settles on a lily pad like a moon that has finally found the sea.
