The cook had been stirring the same pot of barley since the squall struck off the Dogger, and the men below had stopped asking for their supper. Her grandmother had told her that a galley was a small temple if you let it be one. Stand still, the old woman said, and the pans will stand with you. Ruth had laughed at that in Hull, but on the third night out she found herself doing it anyway: knees soft, eyes half closed, counting the breaths between each lurch of the hull.

When the boy Tobin came down the ladder white to the lips, shouting that the foremast had gone, she did not turn. She set the ladle across the pot, wiped her palms on her apron, and said, 'Sit. Breathe with me. Then we'll see what's broken.' He sat on the flour sacks, and after a while his shoulders came down from his ears. Above them the wind kept howling, but the stove lid stopped rattling.

By dawn the mast was only splintered, not lost, and the crew came down to find their barley hot and the galley dry. Tobin asked her what she had been doing, sitting so still. Ruth tapped the lid of the pot with the ladle and said that a cook doesn't fight the sea, she simply makes the soup while it rages.
